Yesterday evening I took an Uber home from my studio in Rockwall to my home in Date. I usually don’t choose a shared ride because I always feel a little funny not being able to hear anyone behind me.
Anyways, i have an injury to my knee which means that every time i sit down, my knee shifts and it takes standing for a minute before walking. I usually just try to walk anyway especially when I know I need to get out of the way.
Well, I stepped out of the car and my knee locked and I think I gasped a little because next thing I knew, the man that was in the back seat during the ride that I hadn’t spoken to, or heard him say anything during the ride, jumped out of the car, linked his fingers with mine and walked me up to my front porch.
There are 52 steps from my curb to my front porch. I know because I train almost every day with steps, squats, lunges and ball throws up and down that sidewalk, trying to rebuild my balance and strength.
I’m not in any pain, just aggravation that my healing is taking its sweet time.
But I can’t help but think that one reason for this is to show me how many kind, courageous, thoughtful people there are and how grateful I am to be able to hold hands with strangers even for only 52 steps.
I hope this gentleman sees this. I hope he knows that he made my walk easier and that I have thanked God for him both last night and today.
C.S. Lewis wrote, “ There are no ordinary people; you have never talked to a mere mortal,” and I believe this with all my heart. Maybe this man thought he was just doing something ordinary, something that any gentleman would do, but I think it was an extraordinary act and it really is what we are called to do which is simply this-
““Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’”
The strength to walk a woman he’s never seen before 52 steps to her house, the willingness to see a need and fulfill it, the heart to regard others as worthy of time and attention.
It was no ordinary walk, it was an extraordinary gift.
Thank you, whoever you are, thank you.
I’m adding my picture just in case he’s in this group and thinks it could have been him.
