Any Language

Jeanna’ Soul

Good morning! I just gotta tell y’all something.

Yesterday, my Uber driver didn’t speak English.

As he saw me at the mailbox, he stepped out of his car and offered his arm and we walked around and he opened the passenger door and helped me into my seat, then put my backpack in the back seat.

I started to explain directions and he motioned for me to wait while he got his phone to the translate app.

We smiled at each other and then I spoke into his phone, hoping it would understand my half deaf Texan accent clearly as i said, “You will need to take me to the back of the house, which
will be Alamo street.”

We rode in an easy silence because I don’t speak Spanish and he doesn’t speak enough English but then, at the red light, he started keeping beat – although there was no music playing.

I reached for my own phone and turned on Spotify to Spanish worship music and watched a broad smile come across his face.

He kept the beat, tapping his fingers against his legs and the steering wheel while I simply enjoyed the rhythms and the sounds of voices lifting in praise.

It didn’t matter that i didn’t know the words, because I know the feeling.

When we pulled into the parking lot, I gathered my purse and he opened my door, offered his hand and we walked hand in hand through the parking lot, down the stone path, up the porch and stood at the entrance of the house.

“Gracias, Jorge, thank you,” I said as I squeezed his hand
and he smiled and tipped his hat.

I walked inside and this thought hit me.

“ Gentlemen always know how to treat a lady.”

It’s the truth and there’s another thing to ponder, a play off another well-known saying that goes like this,

“Kindness is a language that the deaf can hear and the blind can see.”

You see, kindness is an universal language, love and compassion have no communication barriers, it is felt, seen, touched, noticed.

It is beautiful, and breathtaking, and within each of us.

It is that simple and that extraordinary.

We are all created by the same God, for the same purpose- to be known and loved- for our good and His Glory.

We don’t have to speak the same language to speak love and grace and mercy to each other.

We don’t have to see the same way- in fact, we shouldn’t- to see the beauty in each other.

We don’t have to know each other well, to know each other as someone God created and loves.

We only have to show the same compassion we want to receive.

Isn’t that something else?

I hope you have an extraordinary day and find treasures in unexpected places- like I imagine I will with whoever my drivers are today!
