The words I heard

And those l read

Made me doubt

Many things

But I always knew

Without a doubt

That I was loved

Even if you have doubts

 I Count

I count

The books on the shelf

Pictures on the wall

Candles and lamps

Candy in the dish

Every single blind

All the outlets, too

Every hole and crack

Anything at all

To pass the time

Help me look the part

Play the role

Like I’m supposed to do

I count the steps And the pews

 The ladies and gents

All the children, too

While looking straight ahead

At the preacher I can’t understand

I count the minutes on the clock

The number of reps

Those on my scale

And those that let me know

If anyone’s been reading my poems

I count the days since

The last time you came by

And i count down

To the next time

I count the kisses

Wrapped in shiney foil

Cause I always lose count

Of the kisses on my lips

I count the flowers as they bloom

But I never count the seeds

I plant

I count the boots

Laying in my closet

God alone counts the steps I’ve taken in them

I count on my friends

That count on me

I always seem to lose count

Of how much money I’ve made

But sure seems like somehow there’s always just enough

I count all my blessings

Till I fall asleep

And I just keep on counting

As if,somehow, it’ll feel like  I  count, too.

Mindful……patio pondering

Be mindful, be present, be “all there”,,, the last few days, I have been reading and pondering and writing and this thought keeps coming back … “be all there, wherever you are, whatever you do”

Pay attention… to the light in someone’s eyes, to the scent of a friend, to the aroma of fresh baked bread, listen to every whispered word, to the sound of the wind rustling the leaves, to the tenderness in the voice of a stranger…feel the callouses  in the next hand you hold, linger in the embrace, stroke the face of someone you love, reach out and touch a stranger, let your hands grasp- for a moment – as you exchange money or reach for your cup of coffee…..  Notice…  what the people around you are wearing.. begin to know them well enough to know what colors and styles they like, notice the little things- a necklace, earrings,..  ask about something— you may hear the most wonderful story about the cape they are wearing.   Look closely… pretend, my friends, that you can not hear well.. and really watch what people say.. read their lips, their body language, their expressions….  get to know them…   “yada yada”…  a Jewish friend told me once that it means ” to know, and to be known”….  we can only do this .. when we are mindful, when we pay attention, when we savor the moments and the people… and allow ourselves to indulge in joy, in moments, …  be all there… in every kiss, in every sip, in every hug, in every dance, in every song, in every cup..  please.. just , just try.

Over and Over, Again

I swear
It’s beginning to sound
Like a broken record
Spinning tales
Beating around the bush
Same ol story
Here we go again
One more time
Over and over, again
But each time
I give in
Take another chance
Open up the can of worms
Spill the beans
Speak my mind
I find myself
Back in the space
I know so well
Between a rock and hard place
Wishing I could
Take it all back
Hop on the time machine
Hide underneath
A cloak of disguise
In plain view of everybody
Over and over, again

Turquoise Cottage

I saw this cottage

And she invited me

“Come around again

Take another look

Can you just imagine

How I would look

With jasmine growing along the steps

Pennyroyals filling the cracks between the path

Trumpet vines cascading over

Lavender and sage growing almost wild beside lantana bushes lining my sides

A few rocking chairs scattered here and there

Windchimes playing melodies

Every kind of mint in handpainted pots

Just waiting for a glass of tea

Wouldn’t I be a lovely place

For you to sit and rest

Read a book and write your own

Kick off your boots and dance

Barefoot on the floor

Hang some chiffon and lace in the windows

Enough to keep the out shadows but leave the light

We could have so much fun

If only I wasn’t so far away

For you to invite

The rest of those that matter so much to come and gather

At the turquoise cottage

That invites “
